Our view of the service

Date of assessment 1 May to 16 May 2024. Westfield House is a residential care home providing support to up to 4 people. The service provides support to adults with a range of mental health needs. We undertook a responsive assessment of this service based on concerns around the quality and safety of care. During the assessment we found no evidence people were at risk of harm from these concerns. The assessment was announced as it is a small service and we needed to be sure that the provider or registered manager would be available to support the assessment. We assessed 13 quality assessments from the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led key questions. There were systems and processes in place to safeguard people from the risk of abuse. Accidents and incidents were recorded clearly and risk assessments were reviewed and updated to keep people safe. Medicines were managed safely and people received their medicines as prescribed. We saw evidence of a learning culture where practice was improved and developed in response people's changing care needs. There were enough staff to support people safely and staff were recruited safely. People had input into their support plan and their needs were assessed clearly. People were supported in line with the Mental Capacity Act and their rights were respected. Staff responded to people's immediate care needs and we saw evidence of good partnership working. Quality monitoring at the service was effective and as result, all areas of care delivery were monitored and developed to drive improvement.

People's experience of this service

People told us they felt safe and were supported by staff who knew them and their needs well. However, some people said that recruitment had been difficult and as a result, there had been a lot of changes in staff and the management team. People said this had improved recently, and as a result, care delivery was much more consistent. People told us they were actively involved in the planning and delivery of their care, and had input into reviewing and updating their care plans. People spoke positively of the staff approach which was described as "good" and "incredible". There had been changes in the management team which people said had a positive impact on care delivery. People felt confident and comfortable in raising concerns to the management team who were described as "approachable". People knew how to raise concerns should they need to, and felt they would be valued and listened to. People told us their families were actively involved in their care and worked with the staff team to ensure people's needs were met. People's feedback was sought regularly through meetings, forums and surveys to ensure their views were captured and their care amended to reflect their needs, wants and wishes.
