Independence, choice and control
We heard staff asking people where they wanted to sit and who with.
Care plans contained information about supporting people to maintain their independence. One person told us; “[Staff name] is always about checking during the day, they get us doing things.” The manager was introducing a resident of the day scheme whereby each person, and their family if appropriate, would have a regular opportunity to discuss their support and any changes that were needed. Some relatives raised concerns about how often people were able to bathe and/or shower. Records indicated some people were supported to shower infrequently. We discussed this with the manager who told us they would address this with staff.
Care plans contained information about people’s preferences.
Staff spoke about the importance of encouraging people to maintain their independence. Minutes from a recent staff meeting showed staff had been reminded of the need to provide person-centred care.
