Policies and procedures were in place including, equality and diversity, human rights and the Mental Capacity Act 2005. For example the Equality and Diversity policy seen was a detailed policy which included all protected characteristics but also details about many religions and cultures including a summary of the beliefs, language, food, personal care and hygiene and festivals. We reviewed an outcomes tracker. This showed some outcomes for people had been set and then reviewed, relating to personal care and activities.

People were observed to have choice and control. We saw when people asked to go out they were supported to do so. One person requested a balloon, and the registered manager went to get one for them. People were offered a choice of drinks at mealtime and when people requested a drink throughout the inspection, they were supported to get one. Relatives felt people were supported with independence and choice. One relative told us, “They give her choices, encourage and support. What might work one day not the next staff are very flexible. They encouraged her to do more things for herself e.g. make tea and cooking, they go at her pace, if she is struggling they take a break.” Another relative said, “The staff provide her with choices of the things she likes and she chooses these. She goes out and loves this. She can chose to go out into the garden.”

We reviewed daily records for people. Records showed people were given choices for example, personal care, clothing, food, music, and activities. People were being supported when they change their minds throughout the day. Daily notes showed that people were being encouraged to be as independent when possible.
