Independence, choice and control
People and families were supported to make choices about their care and maintain their independence. A relative said, “I am fully involved in [family members] care. I talk all the time with the carers so if something was not working, we could make changes quickly.” They also commented, “[Family member] isn’t able to do a lot for themselves but the carers do encourage them to do a little bit when they can and within their capabilities.”
People's choices and preferences were recorded in their care plans including how these are met. Care plans and risk assessments were regularly reviewed and updated as people's needs changed.
Staff supported people to be independent and encouraged people to do as much as they could for themselves. One member of staff said, “When we are giving personal care we will encourage [person] to raise their hands and their legs to assist with washing and dressing.
