Our view of the service
Date of assessment 1 to 23 October 2024. This assessment was completed following concerns about identifying and escalating deterioration, response to safeguarding events, nutrition and hydration, dignity and respect and staff training. We assessed a limited number [13] of quality statements and found areas of outstanding practice. The scores for these areas have been combined with scores based on the key question ratings from the last inspection. Our overall rating remains good. We found people received an exceptional standard of care. People spoke of the kindness of staff and described their care as excellent. One relative wrote, “My family and I are just delighted to see Mum so happy, comfortable and so well cared for at Carpathia. [There is] such a lovely welcome from every member of staff when you come.” Staff involved people and encouraged them in their independence and interests. There was a wide-ranging programme of events and activities, including special events tailored to individual wishes and interests. Relatives and staff spoke enthusiastically about the ‘Namaste care’ programme introduced to support people living with dementia, saying it had improved people’s wellbeing, reduced restlessness and increased engagement. Risks in people’s care had been assessed and were regularly reviewed. Staff were quick to identify any changes or deterioration in a person’s health or wellbeing and to seek support. There were clear systems to underpin a proactive culture of safety and feedback was encouraged. Where areas for improvement had been identified, these had been introduced and closely monitored to ensure they were embedded into practice. There was a strong and visible management team who led by example and promoted learning. Staff were supported to perform their duties to a high standard and encouraged to further their professional development. There were effective systems of oversight and governance which delivered positive results.
People's experience of this service
People held the home in high regard. One person told us, “I came on respite, it was so nice and friendly I decided to stay!” Another said, “We are all spoiled here. Everything is very good and I feel very comfortable.” Relatives told us they would not use any other home. One relative said, “We have been extremely satisfied. Carpathia Grange is a warm, welcoming home for our mum and the care she receives is exceptional.” Another relative spoke of a move from another service saying, “We give the Home A+ marks for everything. There have been no problems. We find it has a great environment and the staff are excellent. It has been a revelation after those other experiences, just like chalk and cheese really.” A third shared, “It's such a happy, friendly care home and all the staff are very approachable and want to make sure everyone is cared for in the best way.” Our observations supported the positive experience people and their relatives described. We saw people and staff enjoyed warm, friendly relationships and that people were supported and encouraged in their care, independence and interests.
