Our view of the service

Date of assessment 19 June 2024 to 9 July 2024. 42 Beeston Drive is a care home providing accommodation and personal care to autistic people and people with a learning disability. There were 4 people living there at the time of our assessment. This assessment was prompted by a review of information we held about the service. We assessed a total of 20 quality statements from the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led key questions. We found both good practice and areas of concern. The scores for these have been combined with scores based on the key question ratings from the last inspection. Our overall rating has changed from good to requires improvement. The service was not always safe or well led. We found a breach of the legal regulation in relation to good governance. People's needs were not always assessed and reviewed when things had changed. Governance systems were not always effective and had not identified all of the issues we found during this assessment. At the time of the assessment, there was no registered manager in place. This absence led to a lack of oversight, contributing to operational challenges. Relatives and staff also expressed concerns about the inconsistency and frequent changes in management, which likely added to the instability. The provider was working on improvements, which included an independent consultant supporting the nominated individual. We observed people were supported to have choice and control. There were enough staff to meet people’s needs and ensure people were supported safely. We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of this service

We received feedback from relatives of people who resided at Beeston Drive. Relatives gave positive feedback of staff, who ensured relatives were involved and included in their loved one’s care. This also included any appointments and health reviews. We were told, “[Staff] keep us involved, speak to the GP, dentist. Generally keep us informed of things and appointments.” We observed positive interactions between staff and people. This included communicating in people’s preferred communication style. Staff were respectful of people’s wishes and supported them to make independent choices. Professionals provided positive feedback of a person-centred approach from the provider and staff. One professional shared the improvements a person had made to their wellbeing since moving into Beeston Drive. Relatives told us staff kept them updated on events which occurred. Relatives spoke of their frustration at changes in the management team, which had impacted on the level of engagement they had with them.
