Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us they were able to choose what they wanted to do. One person told us, “I could go out, but I don’t want to, I am happy to stay in my room and watch TV”. Staff encouraged people to maintain their independence. One person said, “I try to do things myself first, if I find I can’t, staff assist me”.

Staff told us how they supported people to make choices. For example, one staff member told us they always asked people what they wanted to do and helped them to pick what clothes they wanted to wear. The activities team produced a weekly activity timetable based on peoples interests and hobbies.

People were supported by staff to be independent with care and activities where possible. We saw positive interactions between people and staff. People were involved in different activities; we observed some people making Christmas decorations, others were engaged in a group quiz. Some people chose to spend time in their room and were able to carry on with interests and hobbies of their choice. For example, 1 person was knitting and told us they preferred to stay in their room. We saw people receiving visitors from friends and loved ones throughout our assessment.

Staff and managers regularly referred to people's care plans. These contained person-centred information including people’s interest and hobbies and life history. Staff reviewed care records to ensure they were accurate and reflected people’s needs.
