Treating people as individuals
We did not look at Treating people as individuals during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Caring.
Independence, choice and control
People’s independence was promoted and people were encouraged to do as much for themselves as they were able to. Care plans included goal setting for people to develop skills. For example, one person was being supported to be more involved in household tasks.
Staff were seen to be kind and caring however they were not always fully engaged with the activities they were supporting people with. For example, we observed one staff member completing a crossword puzzle, however there was minimal engagement with the person during this activity. We also observed one person was watching a TV show they were said to enjoy, however staff had not noticed this was being played in a language the person did not understand.
People were supported to access the community and participate in activities and events they wanted to. For example, 1 person was supported to attend youth club each week. People were able to have friends and family visit when they wanted.
Staff were aware of person centred care and championed choice in the service. One staff member told us, “[Staff] cannot take away [people’s] right to take risk. [Staff] are here to support and promote people’s independence and dignity. We involve people as much as we are able. Where people are not able to be directly involved, we seek the views of other important to them.”
