Our view of the service
Avon View is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care. The home is registered for up to 81 people. Avon View provides support to older people, some of whom live with dementia. At the time of our inspection there were 70 people using the service. Accommodation is provided over three floors, and each floor has a lounge, dining areas and specialist bathrooms. All floors are accessed by a lift and stairs. There are outside spaces for people to enjoy and all have level access.
People's experience of this service
People told us they were happy and safe with the care and support at Avon View. Many of the staff had long service at the home and told us they were supported well by their colleagues and enjoyed their job. People received their medicines safely. However, some storage temperatures were recorded slightly outside normal range. This had not been identified by the home’s audit system, the manager sought to rectify the omission immediately and we were fully satisfied by this action. Staff knew how to keep people safe and well and felt confident any concerns would be followed up. People’s risks had been identified, assessed, and planned for, staff knew people well and what risks faced them each day. Staff worked in a safe way to ensure risks were reduced for people and adapted if they changed. The manager told us, “Resident safety is my priority.” Staffing levels were calculated by assessing the needs of people. Following feedback received during the inspection, the manager told us they would continue to look at staffing and was considering a new method of calculation. Staff had received training and told us they were well supported in their role. Consent was sought from people to ensure they were involved in decisions about their care. People lived at Avon View with the correct consent in place or legal authority to ensure their rights were fully respected. People told us staff were kind, affectionate and caring. People had person-centred care plans and assessments in place. Staff had access via the electronic care planning system, this meant oversight was in real time and changes could be made quickly. There was a manager in place at Avon View and they had started their application to CQC to become the registered manager for the home. The management team was established and were continuing to work on improvements and strengthening their oversight of the home. Leadership was multi-layered and various audits and checks meant the home was seeking continued improvement.
